To:  The Pennsylvania General Assembly

Subject:  Calendars

Dear Senators and Representatives,

I just checked my calendar and the above date is correct.  To be certain, I looked at the other dozen or more calendars I receive every year through the mail and from my church.  The only error was this letter should have been written and dated January 1, 2008, but my trusty computer let me down.

Finally, I have my computer up to speed.  All it needed was more memory, like the writer of this letter.

My thanks are extended to my Representative Glen Grell and Senator Pat Vance for NOT sending me a calendar this year.  I do not need any more calendars.  If someone out there needs a calendar; I’ll gladly supply them with one.

I recall reading where the General Assembly spent $131,500 in producing calendars for 2008.  The cost to mail each calendar was $1.65.  Why are we in the business of printing and mailing calendars?  What benefit do they have except for keeping your name in front of a thousand constitutes for 12 months?

1000 calendars will not get you re-elected.  You might get 2000 votes from them; far fewer than needed.  Think of the number of votes you would receive by eliminating this unneeded, and really unwanted expense to the taxpayers.

With my newfound memory; I recall my grandmother telling me many years ago – “Billy, if you watch your pennies; the dollars will take care of themselves.”  It’s obvious you didn’t listen to your grandmothers.

One senator did listen.  Congratulations and many thanks are extended to Senator John Eichelberger for refusing to participate in the program; thus saving the taxpayer needed tax dollars.  Way to go, Senator Eichelberger!  If you need an extra calendar, just let me know and I’ll send you one.

Our state desperately needs dollars for roads, bridges, mass transit, education, property tax relief; to name a few.  Our tax dollars are being spent on calendars, sports stadiums and convention centers to name a few.  It doesn’t make cents, with many needed dollars again wasted by our beloved government.

Ole penny pinching,

Bill McIntyre
